3D TV: Now leaping out of the cinema and into a living room near you.
Is 3D TV really going to happen?
Yes, and sooner than you think. Three-dimensional screens – such as Samsung’s PS50A476 plasma – are already on sale in the UK, and this Christmas will see the launch of a 3D projector from Optoma, slated to cost around £1,000. Sony, Toshiba, Philips and Panasonic will all go into production with 3D TVs next year.
Can I watch TV in 3D right now?
Not unless you are a real nerd. The only thing you can play on Samsung’s flatscreen and Optoma’s 3D projector are games, using an adaptor kit for high-end PCs or software such as TriDef 3-D Experience. Although you can spruce up 2D video to look fairly solid, there are no dedicated players for home 3D video.
Didn’t we have all this before?
Yes, but new 3D technology is very different from movies that required red-and-green glasses. Instead of flat characters artificially picked out of scenes, new 3D effects are solid and lifelike, and created digitally by computer. They tend to appear as ‘depth’ in a screen, rather than characters leaping out.
